The Storm

Have you ever noticed how when you’re in the midst of a storm, the same wind that used to gently caress your cheeks, the rain that seemed to tickle you gently, the trees that gave you shelter from the sweltering sun on a mid-summer day, the ground that gently crunched under your feet as you step on it or gave you a soft place to sit on – all of a sudden, they seem to work collectively against you now. The wind seems to resist every move you make, the rain falls heavily and blocks your vision, the trees intimidate you with their wild branches flailing about in the wind, and the ground refuses to give you a steady footing.

The odd thing is it’s not really that the wind has changed, nor the trees, nor even the ground beneath your feet, but the season has changed. And while you may be exactly where you were before, surrounded by exactly what once brought you comfort, and yet find yourself now in a place of unrest.

What makes all the difference for you here, is knowing that this experience doesn’t make either the wind evil, or the rain foul, or the trees malicious, or even the ground cruel. It does mean that you have to know what season you’re in, and prepare for it. Perhaps then, you’ll find that when you take shelter in the storm, you’ll realise that even the very elements too are finding their own way to navigate being in the storm, hoping that they may regain calm once again for when it’s time.

For me, my storm, at times, can simply be life, and my shelter is Jesus.

What’s yours?
